Genus Latrodectus
Most likely L. mactans, southern black widow. Identification is rather straightforward given the black orb and red markings. But there is a more curious question:
Why is a black widow corpse on my car roof?
It is late June, and one is not too surprised to see a widow around here. Yet the presence of a dead one on top of my car raises uncertanties, and the mind begins to lose its balance under such blows. Natural causes? Unlikely… What then?
Who might be doing me a favor? And for what shall they ask in return? What is the standard repayment for a favor such as this?
Or is it a warning? A friendly heads up or a show of strength and skill to put me on notice? To what end?
Years ago I worked at a daycare and elementary school. My duties included maintenance and security — I did everything from basic plumbing to managing the security system. One day I killed a black widow on the playground and stored her in a glass jar on my work desk. I regarded her every day to remind myself to be careful, that these children depended on me. Until I was laid off. But even then, the memory of that spider has stayed with me far longer than her natural lifespan. Females live up to three years, or so they say
Perhaps the message is more subtle
Though it’s night, I raise the garage door and carefully lift her in a tissue and carry her outside. I lay her in the grass next to the low rock wall covered in creeping charlie
I’m a bit uneasy about dreaming tonight
