I recently read A Separate Peace by John Knowles. Reread: as so many before me and after, I read it first in junior high and/or high school.
Here’s the thing: it was much more powerful this time around. Is it from age, looking back on my experiences and consequences as Gene does, walking the grounds of Devon and sliding into his narrative? And a sense of loss that comes not from one catastrophic act but hundreds of little decisions, little sacrifices along the way…
I don’t know.
